So far our award winning series has focused on NCAA football and basketball. We now pick up the series with history of legacies.

So football is the most popular, but there are plenty of other sports with great, rich histories. NCAA Basketball is fmaous for several of these. At the top of the list are the UCLA Bruins. They have an incredibly impressive 11 championships, far more than anyone else. Even more so, 10 of which were under the famed coach John Wooden between 1964-1975. Kentucky is second with seven titles. As for the conference with the most wins, that would the ACC. What the SEC is to football they are to basketball. They have consistently been the most dominant conference with a total of 12 champions coming from their conference.  Five from the North Carolina Tar Heels, four from the Duke Blue Devils, 2 from the North Carolina State Wolfpack and 1 from the Maryland Terrapins.Looking at their wins makes UCLA’s all the more impressive.

Then there is women’s basketball.If you enjoy it then you will know of the University of Tennesse who has 8 championships. The University of Connecticut, or UCONN, is next with 7 wins to their school.  Louisana Tech, USC and Stanford are next with only 2 wins each. How about Americas favorite past time, baseball? The College World Series dates back back to 1947 and like the other sports, they have certain school that stand out. The University of Southern California has the most wins with 12 titels in 21 appearances. The under performing Longhorns of the University of Texas have 6 wins in 34 tries. If you think that is bad, check Florida State which has been 20 times but never won. Louisana State, the University of Miami, Cal Stat Fullerton and Arizona State have also had successful teams.

How about something more exotic like swimming or diving? Tied at 11 titles each are the Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes. West coasts fans can cheer for Stanford who has 8 or if you are in the South try Auburn with 8 or Texas with 9. Come to navy education online for a great education today.

College mascots, some of them we love, some we loathe. The often cute, but always iconic creatures that can be seen roaming the sidelines of any college football game at any given time. They can take many forms, from animals to characters to animals personified as characters and then there are those that are just plain strange. They have come to represent the unyielding loyalty of countless fans everywhere while also personifying the values of their schools.  Considering every school out there, that makes for literally millions of fans in the world. The biggest being college fans. There some pretty interesting stories behind some of them. Here are a few. For a great education go to online universities.

From the “what on earth is that?” category we proudly present to you Brutus Buckeye, of the Ohio state Buckeyes. Brutus has a big round head that sort of looks like one of those Little Debbie fudge brownie things, and at first and second glance you would have no real idea what he is supposed to be. Here is the trick, the Buckeye is a tree that grows in the Ohio region, and the term “Buckeye” was a reference to the pioneers that originally settled the area. Brutus Buckeye is supposed to resemble the nut that grows from the Buckeye tree. It’s as simple as that, though you may not know from looking at him. Alabama is known as the Crimson Tide, and you have probably heard the phrase “roll tide, roll.”So if you were going to pick an animal to represent a red tide you undoubtably pick an elephant right? Of course you would. Meet “Big Al” the official elephant mascot of Alabama.

Al, as we like to call him, has a simple yet interesting history. Back in the 1930′s a reporter at a football game once wrote that when the first team was heard running onto the field a fan called out, “hold your horses, the elephants are coming.” The idea of the elephant took root. Naturally, it was just a matter of time before one Melford Espey Jr. decided to take it up a notch and wear an elephant costume. With a name like that, we don’t really blame him. Eventually young Melford would become the school administrator who was asked to think up a mascot for the Tide. The elephant was his first choice. After much brain storming the student body voted on the name Big Al. Thus it began. For a great online education go to online navy universities today.

Another great story is the University of Texas Longhorns.  Obviously they use the longhorn cow as their mascot. Okay, nothing odd about that, but what is interesting is how it got its name. The longhorn they use is always named Bevo. Bevo was originally Bo, and while this is not official, the rumor goes something like this. In 1916 Texas’ archrival Texas A&M beat the Longhorns 13-0. Four A&M students reportedly kidnapped Bevo and branded 13-0 on his side. Well, UT couldn’t have this, so is said the 13-0 into Bevo. While this story has never been proven it is more interesting than the newest theory that claims Bevo is derived from the term “beeve”, which used to be used to describe cattle headed to the meat markets. Oh, one more thing, the current Bevo is the 14^th Longhorn to hold the title.

          

Acid reflux is a torrid swelling of the esophagus triggered by a regurgitation ( or attempted regurgitation ) of the gut’s contents.  It is a leading symptom of heart burn that effects roughly one out of every ten adults every day.  The feeling of burning around the heart is sometimes known as heartburn and is one of the many acid reflux symptoms.  The best way to get rid of the immediate evidence of acid reflux is to take an acid reflux tablet. 

Though the root causes are typically unclear, maybe the most common acid reflux cause is a bad diet.  Acid reflux occurs during digestion, when the gut churns up acid or refluxes it into the esophagus, causing a sensation of burning in the chest or throat.  So if you eat too many highly acidic foods like tomato sauces and / or fatty, fried foods, the gut has to process a surplus of acid.  Too much acid can push back through a valve between the gut and the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter ( LES ).  Acid reflux culprits include but aren’t restricted to tomato based sauces, fried and fatty foods, chocolate, alcohol, citrus fruits, peppers, and caffeinated drinks. 

Along the same lines as diet, overeating also causes reflux.  When you eat too much, the gut can not keep up with the demand to process all the acids.  So food gets backed up, and digestive acids infiltrate the esophageal valve to cause that unpleasant burning feeling targeted in the chest. 

Also diet-related, another acid reflux cause is being overweight.  There is a clear relationship between being obese and a notable increase in the occurrence of acid reflux.  Many believe this is as the additional weight puts more stress on the belly and esophagus.  This pressure has been known to open the lower esophageal sphincter ( esophagus valve ), when the valve should be closed.  This permits acid to flee into the esophagus. 

Other considerations that make a predisposition for acid reflux include smoking, use of alcohol, food allergies, certain medicines, and lying down after meals.  As you can tell, the majority of these factors can be overwhelmed by practicing some behavior alterations.  In fact, in numerous cases of recurring acid reflux, life changes are all that is mandatory in stopping heartburn from turning into a chronic disease.  Don’t forget to consult a consultant before embarking on any treatment strategy.
